▸ Methodology

How TrueDoc catches fake Australian documents

Every upload is analysed by an ensemble of models trained on Australian document layouts — ATO forms, Centrelink correspondence, big-four bank statements and standard Australian payroll templates. The engine reconciles the numbers Australian payroll must obey: the super guarantee has a fixed statutory rate, PAYG withholding must match the ATO tax tables and the TFN / ABN both follow strict algorithmic checks.

In parallel, TrueDoc reads the PDF's internal metadata — the software that produced it, edit history, embedded fonts and object structure — to spot editing-tool fingerprints. AI-generated documents are flagged by a dedicated synthetic-content classifier.

Illustrative view of what a suspicious payslip returns. Signals shown are the real checks TrueDoc runs against Australian payroll documents.

  • Super guarantee rate mismatch — Payslip states 9.5% — the ATO-mandated rate for the current financial year is 11.5%.
  • ABN format validation failed — The stated Australian Business Number does not pass the mod-89 checksum used by the ATO.
  • PAYG withholding calculation error — PAYG withheld is 6% lower than the ATO fortnightly tax-table amount for the stated gross.
  • PDF edited in image editor — Producer 'Photoshop' — Australian payroll systems export via a payroll engine, not an image editor.

▸ Rental & Lending

Payslips, super and Australia's rental-fraud problem

In a hot Australian rental market, agents routinely receive dozens of applications per property — and Equifax Australia reports that more than a third of lenders and property managers have seen an altered payslip or bank statement in the past year. Because the super guarantee rate, PAYG withholding and TFN / ABN formats all follow strict rules, altered Australian payslips are unusually easy to catch when you know where to look.

TrueDoc gives real-estate agents, property managers, mortgage brokers and HR teams a fast, free way to sanity-check what an applicant has sent them before it drives a decision.

What TrueDoc gives you
  • Validate super guarantee rate and PAYG withholding against ATO-published values
  • Reconcile bank-statement running balances and inspect PDF metadata for edits

▸ Checklist

Australian document red flags checklist

These are the fastest checks a reviewer can run before escalating a document. TrueDoc runs every one of them automatically.

Wrong super guarantee rate

The super guarantee has a statutory rate published by the ATO for each financial year. A payslip using last year's rate on a current pay period is a strong tell.

Invalid ABN checksum

Every real Australian Business Number passes the mod-89 checksum. A fabricated ABN almost always fails it.

TFN checksum failure

The Tax File Number uses a weighted checksum. Any TFN that doesn't validate is fabricated or transcribed incorrectly.

Invalid BSB

BSBs map to specific banks and branches via the APCA register. A BSB that doesn't resolve is almost always fabricated.

PAYG doesn't match ATO tax tables

The ATO publishes tax tables per pay frequency. Forged payslips frequently understate PAYG by a few percent.

PDF producer inconsistent with issuer

Real ATO, Centrelink and bank PDFs are produced by known software. A statement 'produced by Word' or 'Photoshop' is a strong red flag.
